Santa Cruz County Supervisors meet behind closed doors about treasurer investigation | News

NOGARES, Ariz. (KVOA) – Santa Cruz County supervisors held a special meeting Friday morning in relation to an ongoing investigation of misused taxpayer dollars.

The only item on the agenda was discussions during the executive session, so no public members were involved in the meeting.

The supervisors met in a closed room for about an hour before postponing the meeting without public discussion.

Chairman Manny Lewis told News4 Tucson that they can say they can say while the FBI continues to investigate former treasurer Elizabeth Gaffer.

“We know we have a forensic accountant who is working on it, which gives our staff a weekly report,” Lewis said.

He was unable to share that latest update.

Guffer resigned from her position last month, and her home was attacked by the FBI as part of a search warrant a few days later. She has not been criminally charged.

Some Santa Cruz County residents say News 4 Tucson has lost faith in their elected leaders. Alex Chamberlain wonders why it took so long to discover the contradiction.

“Taxpayer money should be used in the right way and should be able to trust the people of the government in this town,” he said.

“It makes every elected leader look bad. We are trying to be as transparent as possible with the public, so that we don’t interfere with the federal investigation,” Lewis explained. .

Lewis hopes to be able to hold a public update that was released in about 60 days, but he said he is not married to the time slot. He said they’ll spend the time “getting this right” before they can inform the public more.
