Backyard flock in Maricopa County tests positive for Bird Flu

The Arizona Department of Health has published an update on the state’s avian flu that spreads to humans.

Phoenix – A backyard flock in Maricopa County tested positive for avian flu. When poultry began to show clinical signs consistent with bird flu, samples from that location were submitted to the National Veterinary Services Institute (NVSL) for testing, and results were confirmed on November 21st. The owner reported signs of illness in the herd. A hotline for sick birds that promotes rapid and efficient responses to reduce the risk of spreads.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk to the general public is considered low. The highest risk of exposure is individuals directly involved in daily bird care and rearing. Information on workers and owner safeguards and bird flu monitoring can be found on the CDC website, which is updated regularly.

“ADHS is working with AZDA and the local health department in response to avian flu and will continue to work with the local health department to monitor Arizona’s flu activity. The risk to the general public remains low However, workers and individuals at risk of exposure to avian flu should follow public health guidance.”

The affected areas were placed under quarantine and efforts were made to eliminate the virus. All applicable hygiene responses were implemented quickly. Our dedicated and experienced team continues to monitor the situation closely.
