President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Saturday, designating English as the official US language.

Under Trump’s directive, agencies are permitted to continue to provide multilingual services at their discretion. However, the White House has not made clear whether it will issue additional guidance on how agents will implement or coordinate these services. “Establishing English as an official language not only streamlines communication, it also strengthens shared national values and creates a more cohesive and efficient society.” The executive order states.

English has long been the main language used in government business and official US documents, but it has never been formally declared to be the official language of the country.
