President Donald Trump’s freeze on foreign aid has shut down three transgender clinics in India as liberal causes around the world are losing taxpayer funds.
MITR Clinic, the country’s first health agency “only for the transgender community,” closed three facilities on January 24 after Trump cuts most of its budget, Indian press reported Sunday and Monday. The clinic was almost entirely dependent on American taxpayer funds from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Former President Joe Biden’s State Department Celebrated MITR Clinic opened in 2021 and the premiere of the documentary “MITR Clinic – Pride and Beyond.” Biden’s USAID used the federal AIDS relief program to help open the clinic in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University.

“As the White House report was released on November 20th. [2021] The US government is taking important steps to address the root causes of anti-transgender violence, discrimination and denial of economic opportunity to commemorate the Announced Transgender Day, a US diplomat said in a State Department news release. “Providing community-driven, comprehensive healthcare services to the transgender community, these clinics are a major step towards building a more inclusive society for LGBTQI+ people.”
According to the State Department and the Indian Express, the funds came from former President George W. Bush’s “Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)” programme, reaching around $2,290 in Indian currency.
A clinic official told the Indian Express that “gender affirmation services constitute only 1% of their customers,” but the other services focus on “the basic health care of trans communities that are otherwise expelled.” One facility was based in the old town, a majority Muslim neighbourhood of Hyderabad city.
The Indian Tribune newspaper reported that patients with more common medical needs, such as HIV treatment, are being directed towards other institutions that treat them.
Trump aims to close its Washington, D.C. headquarters, fire staff, cut 90% of foreign grants, and dissolve USAID to those that consider wasteful spending. Elon Musk, the leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and other conservatives, have criticised the institution’s history of convincing taxpayer money to terrorist organizations, left-wing advocacy groups and efforts to spread LGBTQ ideology around the world.
