DOUGLAS CARSWELL: Why Is Mississippi’s Legislature Having Such A Hard Time Passing Conservative Agenda?

The Mississippi Legislature has a clear conservative mission, but sometimes they struggle to get things done. why?

Gov. Tate Reeves clearly has a vision for Mississippi. He wants to promote economic growth and eliminate state income taxes. He is also quite significant in his efforts to improve law and order, the development of the education system and workforce. (Related: Newt Ginrich: 5 Principles Never Forget Republicans)

Whether or not you agree with him, there is no denying that he has our state plan.

And so is the family chair, Jason White. He requested income tax removal, which claims his biggest goal for this session. Under White Speaker’s leadership, the House has also passed a bill to extend school choices and reduce the deficit that limits healthcare.

The house is moving forward with purpose.

But what about the Senate? What are their plans? Two months after the three-month session, it remains a mystery. Instead, Senate leadership says most of the session “no” For almost every suggestion on the table. School choice? He was killed by the committee (almost). Do you want to restore your voting initiative? It was rejected. Income tax removal? Do not hold your breath.

Senate leaders blocked conservative reforms every time without providing their own ideas. This is confusing.

Mississippi has elected overwhelmingly conservative leaders for offices across the state. But here we see a stall policy of Senate leadership that is consistent with the values voters have supported, but all did not advance the alternative path.

Usually, negotiations are expected at this stage of the session if the House and Senate are upset. How can the House of Representatives negotiate with Senate leaders who struggle to clarify what it wants?

This is not a one-off. A pattern is appearing.

First, the House of Representatives shows its intention to reform. Think about White’s focus this year on income tax and school choices, or on school funding reforms last year. The Senate then responds with silence – no opposition formation or vision.

Finally, when the House overthrows the bill, Senate leaders work to kill them. Is this really the best we can do?

This is in contrast to Washington. Just a month after President Trump began his second term, we have seen gusts of bold initiatives. He accomplished more in weeks than Mississippi leaders have in years.

Our taxpayers are better than councils who can’t agree with basic conservative priorities such as empowering parents and reducing taxes in education. For a long time, Jackson’s process has been shrouded in mystery.

The bill “die on the committee” without explanation, accountability or recorded votes. It is said that support is not there – but no one will see the tally. It’s time for transparency.

That’s why the Mississippi Public Policy Center (MCPP) is stepping up. This session has four distinct goals: public school choice, income tax abolition, anti-DEI law, and certificate of abolition.

Bills have been drafted to address each of these priorities. By the end of the session, all lawmakers would have had the opportunity to support them. Soon, we’ll launch online tools for 80,000 subscribers across the state, showing which senators, representatives, and statewide officials have earned “Trump’s approval” and which aspects are gaining progressive agendas. Mississippi deserves to know who delivers and who is avoiding it.

The obstacles to good conservative policies must be made public. With your support, we are bringing the spotlight to Congress and holding leaders accountable.
