‘Hurting All Students’: Education Groups Sue Trump Admin Over Department Abolition

Several education groups announced lawsuits against the Trump administration on Monday over the decision to begin a breakdown in the Department of Education.

The National Association of Education (NEA) and the National Association of Colored People (NAACP) are some of the organizations that accused them of eliminating faculties and criticizing students for overcoming “constitutional authority of the administrative department.” According to In a press release. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on March 20th asking the Secretary of Education to “take all necessary steps to take to promote the closure of the Department of Education,” urging him to improve the nation’s failed education system and give more power to state and local governments.

“Education is power. By firing half of the workforce at the Department of Education, Trump is not only trying to dismantle agencies, but is also deliberately destroying the pathways that allow many Americans to live better lives,” NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson said in a statement. “The strong exclusion of thousands of important workers hurts the most vulnerable people in our community. The NAACP and our partners have the legal measures necessary to prevent this illegal attack on the future of our children.”

The lawsuit is about to stop the department’s elimination.

Trump has ruled out plans to remove the division before the November victory and expressed the need for dramatic action to repair the state of public education. Student test scores reached some of the lowest levels ever recorded in the United States, according to a January report from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

“While state and local governments are responsible for the majority of the American public education system, Congress has set up a division to fill a longstanding gap in educational opportunities and provide significant funding and support to students,” reads a NEA press release. “The department will do its part by enforcing civil rights laws, supporting students with disabilities, promoting equal educational opportunities, strengthening the workforce of educators, and administering federal student aid programs that reach Americans working at universities.”

President Trump recently announced that several of the department’s functions, including managing student loans and overseeing special needs and nutrition programs, will be transferred to other federal agencies. “Eliminating or effectively closing the department will put millions of vulnerable students at risk, including low-income families, English learners, homeless students, rural students, and other students who rely on department support,” the press release continues. “It also puts the work of more than 400,000 educators at risk, and it is impossible to ensure that the department is actually spent as intended by Congress.

The education sector under former President Joe Biden’s watch has invested more than $100 million in grants to universities aimed at training K-12 social workers with critical racial theory, social justice and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Another $100,000,000 from the Department of Justice went to a project aimed at “LGBTQ inclusion” at K-12 schools “with embedded anti-racism and anti-attacks.”

On March 11, the Ministry of Education cut almost half its staff and eliminated unnecessary and redundant positions. Senior department officials notified the Daily Caller News Foundation at the time that the cuts would not affect any of the important functions of the department.

The NEA, NAACP, the Department of Education and the White House did not immediately respond to DCNF’s request for comment.
