The Supreme Court blocked an order on Friday that forced the Trump administration to pay millions of dollars in teacher training grants.
In a 5-4 decision, the judge suspended a temporary lower court order that prevented the government from canceling grants as part of an effort to reduce programmes related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
The court said the suit “does not refute government representatives.”
Supreme Court Justice John Roberts would have denied the government’s demands, the order said.
“It is a mistake for the court to grant this emergency application,” Judge Elena Kagan wrote in dissent. “The government will not adhere to the legality here to cancel the problematic education grants.”
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote in a dissent, joined by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, that “the majority of judicial stakeholders who consider the government’s application to be a state of emergency are confused.”
