ALAN DERSHOWITZ: Harvard Will Likely Surrender To Trump

That’s true for most mainstream media and academia. Support at Harvard University As this renowned institution has, New York Times“We decided to fight the Trump administration.”

But as a Harvard faculty member for over 60 years, I know I have no idea what’s actually going on.

Don’t tell Harvard’s leftist professor. However, the university appears to be ready to make a deal with President Trump.

Wednesday morning, the president I raised ante Nearly $2.3 billion in federal funds for a list of complaints, including Harvard’s failure to address an explosion of anti-Semitic hate in classrooms and campuses after threatening to withdraw the university’s tax-free status. (Related: Alan Dershowitz: Can the government cut off funds for a woken university?)

“Everyone knows Harvard has ‘lost a way’,” Trump said. Posted A true society. “Harvard is a joke, teaches hatred and stupidity and should no longer receive federal funds.”

Harvard President Alan Gerber is the man I know and admire, and I might have expected him to be rebellious in the face of such an onslaught and while he was standing up. Battlefronthe appears to be preparing to negotiate a settlement.

That’s something that the legions of scholars and advisors on the far left may find abominable. But that’s the reality.

Harvard is older than the US and richer than many countries. $50 billion donation), and among the world’s most influential academic institutions, it relies on federal research grants, tax-deductible contributions from graduates, and tax-exempt contributions to their benefits.

Certainly, Gerber has issued a belligerent reaction to Trump. letterpublicly refuses to compromise on the academic independence of the institution, writing:

That’s a feeling I really agree with.

But at the same time, Harvard holds a lawyer – Ballad Partner -Who has a history of arranging complex agreements close to Trump and his administration.

Gerber’s Missive is clearly intended to appease the majority of Harvard University’s left-wing faculty and administrators. For university presidents to survive, they need to defend their independence, particularly from the Trump administration, from government interference.

Testify to what happened when Dr. Katrina Armstrong, the extraordinary president of Columbia University. It looked like he had surrendered Last month, the White House will appoint a new official to oversee the division that offers biased courses in the Middle East, among other reforms.

Armstrong was suddenly under pressure to resign.

For all Gerber’s maneuver, he certainly recognizes that he is unlikely to win from a long depicted courtroom conflict with Trump. He must also know that the Trump administration will benefit politically from the courtroom fight against Harvard, regardless of uncertain legal outcomes. So instead, Harvard sent a more nuanced message to the Trump administration by keeping the lawyers he could work with.

Perhaps the Trump administration was Overload It will give more influence on course material in the demand to “audit” students and staff’s views and cut funding from legitimate research projects.

But these are complex and subtle issues, but for many scholars, the choice is simple.

Well, it’s not wrong to reform our corrupt academic elitist class and fight anti-Semitism prejudice. That’s why I support the compromise that was negotiated. In fact, it’s essential.

The truth is that many of the government’s demands are very reasonable and necessary.

Harvard has it Serious lack of intellectual, ideological and political diversity. It is primarily a leftist institution, with many perspectives being effectively argued, mainly by self-censorship and peer pressure.

For 50 years, I was one of the most popular faculty members, teaching and lectures to over 10,000 students, to provide one very personal illustration.

However, since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched its most deadly attack on Jews since the Holocaust, I have never been invited to introduce my centralist pro-Israel status on campus. Even before that, when I was invited to a student group, my speech had to move out of campus, fearing my safety.

In recent years, dozens of students have communicated with me. These include not only Jewish and Zionist students, but also Christian and conservative students. The same can be said for some teachers.

Harvard’s culture is infected with a deeply rooted cultural bias that even President Trump cannot cure it immediately.

This is largely due to the tenured Harvard faculty, where rehabilitation is near impossible and completely unrealistic. Because these professors are contractually protected and are essentially not accountable to anyone. That academic freedom has been justified in many ways, but has been abused for decades.

Repressive campus culture is also essentially due to ideological “programs” and departments. These include the Department of Women’s Studies, Gay Studies, Black Studies, and yes, Jewish Studies. These and similar departments tend to be more ideological than academic. Additionally, there are offices of race, ethnicity and gender, including diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). These established bureaucrats will definitely have an impact.

Harvard already has it I’m calmed down Without acknowledging the two lawsuits brought by several Jewish students and organizations claiming anti-Semiticism on campus, and the misconduct, the university has pledged to do more to combat prejudices that lead to de facto discrimination against certain students and faculty.

The negotiated settlement between Harvard and the Trump administration may be another step towards reform, but it is not the last.

Finally, it is important to remember the 1950s when I was a university student, for those who argue that university autonomy and defense of academic freedom is ideologically neutral. In those bad old days, many recurring Southern universities were forced by the federal government to consolidate student organizations, but schools still tolerated the harassment of African-American students and taught racist curricula.

If the federal government had threatened to withhold funds from such racist universities without change, many liberals, civic libertarians and advocates of academic freedom would have been praised.

With the shoe on the other foot, many progressive scholars take the opposite position that should have returned to the 1950s.

For them, it’s about politics, not principles.

For me, it’s about principles, consistency, neutrality.
