Since 2009the British Open is not being held at President Donald Trump’s Trump Turnberry, but the golf governing body, head of the major championship, R&A, wants to bring the course back into rotation.
With the tournament being hosted at the Royal Portrush at the 2025 British Open launch event, R&A CEO Mark Durbon said it was “love” if the open is played again at Turnberry, and hopes that happens soon.
Darbon, who took his position in R&A in 2024, said the biggest hurdle to achieving this is logistical issues. (Related: President Trump defeats awakened nonsense in support of high school in combat)
“The Modern Open Championship is a massive event, and the golf course is fantastic. BBC. “We will consistently work with the venue, its owners and operators to talk about what the Open Championship demands and how we work together to make it happen.”
That being said, Darbon says it’s already been done to bring the opening back to Trump Turnberry.
“In Turnberry, there are undoubtedly logistic and commercial challenges we face around roads, rail and accommodation infrastructure,” Darbon continued. “We have some feasibility into returning to that venue and what the investment it requires will look like.”
