Alabama Regions Receive National Economic Development Award
The Huntsville and Auburn/Opelika areas in Alabama have been awarded the 2025 Mac Conway Award for Economic Development Excellence, a prestigious national honor announced by “Site Selection” magazine.
This award, named after McKinley “Mac” Conway, acknowledges outstanding economic development organizations based on various criteria, including job creation, capital investments, and successful corporate facility projects.
The rankings also incorporate independent assessments from the Milken Institute’s “Best Performance Cities” index and Heartland Forward’s “Most Dynamic Cities” report. This recognition underlines Alabama’s rising profile as a significant destination for investment and job creation.
“This honor affirms what we have seen in Alabama—our community is delivering results,” noted Ellen McNair, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce.
She added, “From Huntsville’s thriving life sciences and aerospace sectors to the strong growth in Auburn and Opelika’s advanced manufacturing, these regions showcase the strength and collaborative spirit that define Alabama’s economic success.”
Auburn/Opelika: A Model of Growth
In just 2024, Auburn saw three new companies establish operations and six businesses expand, resulting in 350 new jobs and a capital investment of $182 million, according to “Site Selection.”
Mayor Ron Anders highlighted the region’s innovative and collaborative ecosystem. “Auburn has positioned itself as a leader in economic growth, not just in Alabama but across the United States,” he said. “The vibrant business community, particularly at Auburn University, sets us up for future success.”
Opelika has also experienced significant growth. Economic Development Director John Sweatman mentioned that in recent years, he has brought more than $2.6 billion in capital investment and over 5,700 new jobs to the area.
Recent initiatives by companies like Niagara Bottling and Miele have played a crucial role in Opelika’s evolution into a regional powerhouse. “What we’ve accomplished in our community wouldn’t have been possible without the collective efforts and support from all stakeholders,” Sweatman remarked.
He also pointed out that in the Milken Institute’s Best Performance City Rankings for 2025, the Auburn/Opelika Region secured the 10th position in the small metro category.
Huntsville: A Center for Innovation
Meanwhile, the Huntsville/Madison County region is establishing itself as a key player among the nation’s dynamic metropolitan areas. The region secured the fourth spot in the Milken Institute rankings, particularly excelling in sectors such as aerospace and life sciences.
“We’re especially enthusiastic about the growth in the life sciences field, particularly with the investment from Glaukos Corporation at Cummings Research Park,” said Lucia Cape, Senior Vice President of Economic Development and Workforce.
She also mentioned various musical initiatives, including the South Star Music Festival and the inception of the Huntsville Music Office, highlighting the city’s cultural vibrancy.
Job announcements from both new and existing aerospace and manufacturing companies continue to drive Huntsville’s success. “In a region recognized with two MAC Conway Awards and a conducive business climate, the momentum for economic development in Alabama is evident,” McNair concluded.
“Communities throughout the state are demonstrating that strategic investments, workforce preparation, and partnership are essential for sustaining economic growth,” she added.
