Voters head to the polls today for the special election in Alabama Senate District 5

Special Election in Alabama Senate District

In December, Governor Kay Ivey announced a special election set for June 24th to fill the Senate seat in Alabama District. This position was previously occupied by Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed, who stepped down to become Ivey’s senior advisor on Workforce Transformation.

Today, voters in northwest Alabama head to the polls to select Reed’s replacement. The candidates on the ballot are Matt Woods, a Republican from Jasper, and Ryan Kale, a Democratic contender.

Residents in the northern sections of Lamar, Fayette, Walker, and Tuscaloosa counties, as well as parts of western Jefferson County, can vote from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If you’re unsure of your polling location, the Alabama Secretary of State’s website can guide you to the correct spot assigned to you.

It’s important for voters to bring a valid photo ID. Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • Alabama driver’s license (either expired or within 60 days)
  • Digital driver’s license issued by Alabama Law Enforcement
  • Non-driver ID from Alabama (not expired or within 60 days)
  • Alabama Photo Voter ID Card
  • State-issued ID (Alabama or other states)
  • Federal ID
  • U.S. Passport
  • ID from Federal Government, Alabama, County, Municipality, or any Alabama Employer ID
  • Student or employee IDs from accredited educational institutions in Alabama or elsewhere (including universities, vocational schools, etc.)
  • Military ID
  • Tribal ID

Election officials are urging all eligible voters in the Senate district to make their voices heard in this important special election. With only two candidates, the outcome will significantly influence legislative priorities in Northwest Alabama.
