Yavapai County aims to fill the open position in District 2

James Gregory Resignation from Yavapai County Board

James Gregory [R] officially stepped down from his position on the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors’ District 2 during a Cottonwood meeting on February 19, after submitting his resignation to the county recorder’s office.

“It was a joy,” Gregory expressed. “It’s bittersweet. Over the years, I’ve built wonderful relationships as a mayor, manager, constituent, and supervisor. This has truly been an enjoyable experience. You all will be missed in my heart. Thank you.”

The board then took a brief 15-minute break and celebrated his appointment as the new police chief of Williams, succeeding Tad Weagal.

“Chief Gregory is an Air Force veteran who joined Williams after a notable 30-year career with the Prescott Valley Police Department,” stated the department in a press release dated January 30. “We believe that Chief Gregory’s extensive experience and commitment to law enforcement will greatly benefit both the Williams Police Department and the city as a whole.”

He was officially sworn into his new role by Mayor Don Dent on February 13.

“As a new supervisor, I truly admire Gregory,” noted Nikkicheck, the District 3 supervisor. “He’s been a fantastic partner and has taught me so much about engaging with the public sincerely.”

“These past seven weeks have been amazing,” added District 4 supervisor Chris Kunyo. “I came to the previous meeting and really appreciated how you managed it, showing respect for the public and allowing them to share their thoughts.”

Filling the Vacant Position

After the meeting, the board gathered to discuss how to fill the now-empty seat. Gregory had won reelection by defeating Wiley Klein during the Republican primary, facing no opposition in the general election. Klein is now expressing interest in Gregory’s vacant position.

The board is actively seeking applications for his successor. The new appointee must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter residing in District 2, a registered Republican, and capable of reading and writing in English.

Interested individuals should submit letters of interest, resumes, financial disclosure statements, and conflict of interest affidavits. These documents can be found online at Yavapaiaz.gov under the “News” tab and must be submitted by 5 PM on March 7.

For further details regarding the position, applicants may reach out to County Manager Maury Thompson or the board clerk at (928) 771-3200.

The Board of Supervisors is expected to evaluate eligible candidates and appoint a new member for the Yavapai County District 2 at a regular meeting scheduled for 9 AM on April 16, according to a press release from Yavapai County.

Deputy County Manager Martin Brennan reminded the board that the process could face obstacles if a fifth supervisor is not present.
