Alabama Farmers Federation Advances Health Plan Bill
The Alabama Farmers Federation (ALFA) is progressing with proposals to implement the Farm Bureau’s health plan through the Alabama Legislature, following a successful vote at its home earlier this month.
Interestingly, there was only one dissenting vote during that process.
In a recent interview, the bill’s sponsor, state legislator David Faulkner (R-Mountainbrook), mentioned that the vote may have even been an accident. He noted that the bill had overwhelming support from its House of Origin.
“Out of 103 representatives, there were 98 votes. In truth, it wasn’t really a ‘no’ vote,” Faulkner explained. “There was just one ‘no’ on the house floor, which turned out to be a mistake.” He made these comments during an appearance on Alabama Public Television’s Capitol Journal last week.
That solitary vote came from Rep. Marilyn Lands (D-Huntsville), who later acknowledged the error in a statement to Yellow Hammer News.
“I didn’t intend to oppose the bill at all; I meant to abstain, and my vote ended up being recorded incorrectly,” Lands said.
Currently, HB477 is pending a final vote in the Alabama Senate, which is anticipated later this week.
ALFA’s legislative team expressed gratitude toward the lawmakers who supported the expedited proposal during the 2024 legislative session, noting that circumstances have evolved since then.
“We appreciate all the lawmakers who have helped bring HB477 to this stage,” they stated. “Special thanks to Senator Arthur Oh, who championed this bill last year and has consistently supported Alabama farmers and small businesses. Rep. David Faulkner also dedicated significant time refining HB477.”
“We want to thank the leaders in the House and Senate for prioritizing this legislation amidst a busy schedule. I’ve heard the concerns from farmers and understand that they need relief,” he added.
The next session of lawmakers will convene on Tuesday, marking the 26th day of the 2025 legislative meeting.
