John Wahl supports measures to establish financial protection for local libraries in the state.

Alabama Senate Protects Library Funding

Recently, the Alabama Senate approved measures in the 2026 Education Budget aimed at safeguarding local libraries throughout the state. This move ensures that Alabama’s library grants will continue, even if federal funding is cut.

The Chamber of Commerce’s decision reflects growing concerns that federal grants for museums and libraries might soon end across the country.

On Monday, John Wahl, president of Alabama Public Library Services (APLS), expressed strong support for this provision, labeling it a “major victory” for local libraries. He urged that it be included in the final budget.

“We not only took steps to ensure our libraries reflect the values of our community, but also made sure they were financially secure,” Wahl commented. “Regardless of what happens at the federal level, our libraries will have the resources needed to serve the public.”

After months of collaboration with state lawmakers, Wahl argued that securing funds for Alabama libraries is essential, especially as it helps prevent inappropriate reading materials from reaching children.

“We’ve worked diligently to shield our children from sexually explicit content,” he noted. “We want every family in Alabama to feel welcome in libraries. By ensuring these libraries are funded, we are committing to trust, accountability, and community service. Public service is about providing solutions that support families.”

If this provision passes, Wahl believes it may serve as a model for other states on how to protect library funding.

“Libraries are vital parts of our community,” he said. “They must be safe and welcoming for everyone, particularly for our children. With this funding, Alabama demonstrates how to uphold both values and access without compromise.”

This new funding clause is part of recent modifications in the APLS code, aimed at ensuring that Alabama libraries remain inclusive for all families.

The education budget is currently pending approval from the State Capitol.
