Sky Island Nature School: A New Approach to Learning
Sky Island Nature School aims to transform education in Cochise County by connecting children with nature. The goal is to create a less stressful learning environment by teaching outside conventional classrooms.
Heather Heredia, the school director, mentioned that, based on her experience in the education sector, many parents are seeking different educational options. “There’s a lot of interest in non-traditional methods,” she noted.
Situated at 9502 AZ-92 in Hereford, this school will take over the premises of the Arizona Academy of Arts. Heredia has invested in real estate specifically to establish this school. It aims to stand apart from others through its project-based curriculum and its focus on nature as a learning tool.
“I think there’s excitement and a strong desire for this kind of learning,” said Heredia.
Located at the base of the Huachuca Mountains, the school will provide various outdoor opportunities like hiking, farm electives, and conservation activities. Heredia also plans to include selective activities such as cooking, swimming, theatre, and visual arts.
“We consider not just the academic aspect but also emotional and physical well-being,” she explained.
Heredia believes that children who start their education positively tend to continue nurturing that passion, which is why they’re creating a school environment they would want for their own kids.
“There’s substantial research showing the benefits of outdoor education,” she added. Her extensive experience as an educator over the past decade certainly contributes to her ability to foster a positive learning space.
“What I don’t want is for young students to feel overwhelmed by education,” Heredia emphasized. “We hope to cultivate an atmosphere where students can be themselves and explore their curiosity.”
The private school is set to open in August, and they hold an informational night every Thursday at 6 PM.
