Updates on the Cochise County wildfire in Arizona

April 30, 2025: Crew reaches 22% containment

Firefighting teams, helicopters, and water tankers have been actively engaged in efforts to control a wildfire in the brushy canyon near Cocheese since Monday evening. The blaze hasn’t really expanded overnight, fortunately, allowing crews to access the area on foot.

Currently, the fire is reported to be about 22% contained.

Tiffany Davila from the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management mentioned that helicopters were instrumental in tracking the fire, while over 240 personnel worked on the ground.

“The terrain in the southwestern and southeastern Dragoons is quite treacherous. We’re taking our time, trying to be thorough, yet move as quickly as possible,” Davila noted.

She indicated that they are particularly focused on areas northeast of the flames, highlighting the necessity to protect the local infrastructure.

“High-voltage power lines and rail lines are at risk. There’s also significant value in this area, including wildlife habitats that could be affected,” Davila added.

According to her, one of the best actions residents can take is to clear away flammable materials like dead plants from around their houses, which would give firefighters more space to operate effectively.

April 29, 2025: Blaze grows to 23,000 acres

The wildfires in Cochise County, which started on Monday, have now escalated to 23,000 acres.

Tiffany Davila, a spokesperson for Arizona Forestry and Fire Management, reported that numerous homes near the Sunsite and Pierce areas have either been evacuated or are under a “set” status.

She emphasized, “Residents need to be ready for possible evacuation. It’s important they prepare their go bags and stay updated with news reports.”

Davila expressed hope that the fire would not grow, though she acknowledged the challenging conditions with strong winds and rocky terrain. By Tuesday afternoon, containment stood at 0%.
