Congress Can Control Unusual and Unnecessary DEI Spending in Science, According to Watchdog

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in NSF Research Funding

A recent report by Openthebooks highlights the actions of the National Science Foundation (NSF) regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in scientific research funding. According to the analysis released, the council has been critiqued for allegedly prioritizing DEI initiatives over traditional scientific values.

The report, first obtained by a news outlet, claims that NSF’s grants are, perhaps too often, influenced by “divisive identity politics.” Openthebooks suggests that the NSF has strayed into what they term “ideological madness” in recent years.

Further, the report alleges that Congress has increasingly pursued DEI initiatives with public funding, noting that the Biden administration has distributed over $800 million in NSF grants focusing on educational projects that promote DEI.

One instance cited in the report involves a $445,600 grant awarded to Ohio State University for a program called “On the Rocks.” This initiative intends to increase diversity in geosciences by integrating artistic expression with technical rock climbing, targeting girls and non-binary individuals aged 16 to 18 in the Colorado Rockies. It’s a unique approach, but it does raise questions about priorities.

Openthebooks argues that current congressional mandates have inadvertently pushed grant proposals to focus more on DEI, minority outreach, and gender issues to secure funding. This can create an environment where funding is diverted from traditional scientific pursuits.

The organization warns that if federal money continues to support these “fadish day grants,” it detracts from vital research that could help address significant health issues, such as breast cancer and pediatric leukemia.

Additionally, Senator Ted Cruz has echoed these concerns in a report that indicates the NSF has funded numerous projects promoting a “neo-Marxist perspective” under the Biden administration. This legislative scrutiny suggests a broader concern within certain political circles regarding how scientific funding is directed.

During a speech to Congress, former President Donald Trump expressed a commitment to dismantling DEI policies that, in his view, encroach upon both federal and private sectors. However, reactions to such policies vary widely across the political spectrum.

As of now, the NSF has not provided any comments regarding these allegations.
