Bill supported by Britt would provide essential military funding to Alabama bases

Alabama is set to receive nearly $119.4 million in military funding, as part of the 2026 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agency (Milcon-VA) Approvals Act, which is championed by US Senator Katie Britt. The bill has progressed through committee and is anticipated to be discussed in the Senate this week, allocating funds for crucial infrastructure enhancements at various military locations across the state.

Britt, who is on the Senate Budget Committee, has earmarked around $32.4 million for Alabama’s military bases.

In her statement, Britt stressed the significance of this planned investment.

“These investments will strengthen the future of defense infrastructure and fighter jets in Alabama,” she commented. “We need to safeguard our homeland against 21st-century threats, and Alabama plays a vital role in America’s military preparedness and unmatched effectiveness around the globe. We take great pride in achieving these wins for our state.”

If approved, the legislation will support four major military installations in Alabama.

  • Fort Rucker is slated to receive $28.4 million, which will cover five essential upgrades, such as a new flight control tower at Tabernacle Stage Field and Cairns Army Airfield, along with a medical evacuation support facility, a fire rescue station, and a maintenance hangar for Lowe Army aircraft.
  • Maxwell Air Force Base will get $4 million for establishing a combined all-domain wargaming center, which will enhance training and simulation capabilities.
  • Redstone Arsenal will see the largest single investment of $55 million for new buildings related to propulsion systems, aimed at supporting cutting-edge defense technologies.
  • Anniston Army Depot is set to receive $32 million for constructing a general-purpose warehouse to improve logistics and storage capacity.

On a national scale, the 2026 Milcon-VA Budget Act suggests a total of $19.8 billion for the Department of Defense’s construction projects across more than 280 initiatives worldwide. It also proposes $133.3 billion for the Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure ongoing support for VA healthcare and services.
