‘A Lot Of Chaos’: Former Harris Campaign Co-Chair Expresses Excitement As Biden Passes The Torch

A former co-chair of Kamala Harris' 2020 primary campaign expressed excitement Sunday about the possibility of the vice president becoming the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee.

CNN political commentator Bakari Sellers appeared on “CNN Newsroom With Fredricka Whitfield” to discuss Biden's decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. The CNN commentator called Biden's announcement “unprecedented” and praised the president's political record before discussing the “excitement” that Harris will be the nominee. “As a Democrat, I served as the national co-chair of the Kamala Harris for President campaign. We're very excited right now. My phone is ringing off the hook. It's going to be crazy. I think there's a lot of excitement and confusion and chaos. But at the end of the day, we have a good chance because the Democratic Party has Kamala Harris and a long list of potential vice presidential candidates to take on J.D. Vance and Donald Trump,” Sellers said.

Prior to Sellers' excitement, a former co-chair of Harris' campaign detailed meetings with the Democratic National Committee (DNC) last week in which she said they had laid out “rules and standards” for the convention scheduled for August, noting that all delegates are due to be certified soon.

“I think there will be efforts and preparations being made to allow the vice president of the United States to participate in this campaign, which has already begun. [and] “Trump has the cash. He's going to see a surge in donations over the next few days. We're not going to have an open primary or eliminate entire candidates like people are dreaming about and warning about,” Sellers said.

“Finally, and I think Elise Stefanik and others, and my response and rebuttal, and I think the vice president and others will say the same thing, Joe Biden has made a clear, conscious decision that he cannot lead the country for the next four years. That's very clear,” Sellers continued. “That doesn't mean he can't lead for the next four months. He's been a leader with integrity up until now, and he's going to end this Administration with a flourish and serve the American people for the next four months. But he has made a critical decision that he can't serve another four years, and he wants to hand the job over to Kamala Harris.”

In a letter posted to his Twitter account, Biden announced that he was withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, saying he believed it was best for the Democratic Party and the country if he foregoes reelection and instead focused on the remainder of his presidency. The president's announcement came after weeks of backlash after more than 30 members of his own party expressed dissatisfaction with Biden remaining the nominee.

But calls from within Washington, D.C., aren't the only ones calling for Biden to drop out of the race. Recent polls show carried out by Seven in 10 adults, including 65% of Democrats, say Biden should drop out of the race and the party should choose another candidate, according to the AP-NORC Center for Public Policy Research. The data also shows that Democrats' dissatisfaction with Biden has risen 10 points in the past month, from 38% to 48%, and the number of Democrats who no longer support Biden has increased from 38% to 48%.

While some lawmakers and leading Democrats have come forward to support the vice president as the next Democratic nominee, others, including former President Barack Obama, have denied the endorsement and instead called for a “process that will produce a quality candidate.”
