The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is urging the public to stay away from rural areas in Yavapai County where the orange liquid has gathered.
The agency issued a statement Friday that residents found orange liquid and orange dirt near Sheldon Road and South Midnight Snap Lane in Walker, southeast of Prescott.
Officials say not much is known about the substance, but they have urged the public to stay away.
“ADEQ has notified and is coordinating with local, county and state officials, including the Walker Fire Department, Yavapai County, and the Arizona Department of Military Emergency,” the agency said. “ADEQ is investigating the situation and working to identify the orange substance and any necessary cleanup measures.”
It warned that rainfall in the area could cause orange liquid to rise to other areas.
The agency advised anyone who has been in contact with the substance and has experienced adverse health effects to contact a doctor as a precautionary measure.
