Flagstaff, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) — Multiple highways are closed in northern Arizona as winter storms continue to ravage the state. State Route 64 (between mileposts 241 and 268) near the Grand Canyon is closed due to weather conditions and a car accident, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Early this morning, I-17 northbound was closed near Flagstaff due to poor visibility and dangerous road conditions. The highway has since reopened. However, ADOT officials are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads as the northern part of the state is extremely icy and snowy. Road closures come after several days of ice and snow predicted for northern Arizona. First Alert Weather Team meteorologist Ian Schwartz said the situation was getting worse as the snow continued to fall. A wave of snow could add about 3 feet of snow in some local areas by the time the storm clears Wednesday morning. “At least until the winter storm warning has passed. If you don’t need to go anywhere, don’t go. Delay your travel plans,” said ADOT spokeswoman Cathy Klein.
Scott Overton, City of Flagstaff’s public works director, said the weather over the next few days would be perfect for relaxation and hot cocoa. Please. Most of the highways are open, but Neighborhood Services are not open.Conditions generally won’t improve in the next 6-8 hours.”
