AHS warns about rising heat-related pet deaths in Maricopa County

MARICOPA COUNTY, Arizona — The Arizona Humane Society is warning pet owners of fatal temperatures following the deaths of a series of fever-related pets in Maricopa County.

Tracey Miller, Director of Field Operations at AHS, said: “The majority of these cases are dogs remaining in backyards or in waterless patios. Triple girders temperatures are fatal for pets, and we are wary of seeing so many heat-related deaths earlier this year.

According to the AHS, the fever-related deaths also include two dogs left in a Queen Creek car last week.

“The car becomes a fatal oven in just a few minutes,” says Miller. “Even on cool days, temperatures can be fatal.”

Ahs wants to remind people that it is illegal to connect pets when temperatures exceed 100 degrees.

Know your pet’s fever stroke signs:

  • Noisy, fast gasp
  • Red gums and tongue
  • Rapid Pulse
  • Excessive thirst
  • Glass eye
  • Excess/lack of drooling
  • Descend/Decay
  • Crucifixion
  • Unconscious
  • 103º + body temperature

If your pet is experiencing these symptoms, be sure to:

  • Move them to a cool place/shade
  • Call your vet immediately
  • Location a niceWet cloth on the belly, ears, feet and neck
  • Instruct the fans to blow it away

however,:

  • Forced water
  • Leave your pet alone
  • use cold Water, this can shock them
