Airbus Celebrates 10 Years of Aircraft Production in Mobile, Alabama
Airbus is commemorating a significant achievement at its manufacturing facility in Mobile—marking a decade of producing commercial aircraft in Alabama.
Since its operations began in 2015 with a workforce of around 300, Airbus has made substantial strides in the aerospace industry within the country. Currently, the Mobile site employs over 2,000 individuals and manufactures A320 and A220 aircraft for clients in both the US and Latin America.
“What was once just an idea has transformed into something remarkable, leading to thousands of jobs and fostering long-term careers, all while driving noteworthy economic progress. This growth will benefit not just Mobile, but the entire region,” a spokesperson noted, reflecting the broader impact of the facility.
Over the last ten years, Airbus has expanded its operations from 116 acres to 190 acres, delivering numerous aircraft, including JetBlue’s A321 “Bluesmobile.” Notably, they also celebrated delivering the 100th A220 aircraft produced in Alabama.
Officials from Alabama expressed their congratulations to Airbus on reaching this ten-year milestone, highlighting the company’s success and its economic contributions.
“The achievements of Airbus in Mobile showcase the results when a top-tier company collaborates with a skilled workforce,” stated Gov. Kay Ivey. “For ten years, they’ve created life-altering opportunities for many, enhancing Alabama’s standing in the aerospace arena.”
Additionally, Ellen McNair, the Alabama Secretary of Commerce, emphasized how Airbus has substantially impacted the state’s aerospace industry over the past decade. She added that the ongoing growth of Mobile demonstrates the strength of the local workforce and the innovative spirit of Alabama.
Employee Reflections
The announcement resonates with Airbus employees who have been part of this journey since the beginning. Stephanie Burt, the head of human resources, recalls the early days when they expected only a few hundred jobs.
“We never thought we’d grow so quickly; 2,000 employees and three assembly lines in just 10 years is incredible,” she remarked.
For quality inspector Brian Nixon, the work feels personal. He said, “This has been a chance to show what we can accomplish here in Alabama. Our products will help families create memories for the next 25 years.”
Shehan Correa, who leads the Structures Engineering team, voiced enthusiasm for the future, looking forward to the continued development of Mobile as an aerospace hub with ongoing job growth and opportunities.
Looking Ahead
Airbus has plans to expand further, with the upcoming launch of a second A320 final assembly line in October. This addition aims to enhance production capability and solidify Mobile’s role in the commercial aircraft sector.
The expansion rests on a foundation of skilled employees, an expanding network of suppliers, and a flourishing local economy.
“Airbus has not only produced cutting-edge aircraft from Alabama but also played a role in establishing the local industry,” remarked Bob Smith, an expert in aerospace and aviation at the Alabama Department of Commerce. “This anniversary serves as a reminder of how sustained investment and local talent can create a vibrant aerospace hub.”
As Airbus looks to the future, its Mobile facility stands as a testament to Alabama’s rising stature in advanced manufacturing and global aviation.
