Alabama Democrats Criticize Trump’s Tax Bill
Recently, members of Alabama’s Democratic Congressional delegation expressed strong disapproval of President Donald Trump’s latest tax legislation, referred to as the “big and beautiful bill.”
This extensive 1,000-page bill narrowly passed with a 215-214 vote and continues the tax cuts initiated in 2017. It notably avoids imposing taxes on tips and overtime payments while introducing work requirements for Medicaid and increasing funding for immigration and customs enforcement. Additionally, it reinstates state and local tax (SALT) deductions.
Representative Terry Sewell (D-Birmingham) opposed the bill, arguing it could lead to devastating cuts to essential programs for Alabama families and potentially add $5 trillion to the national debt.
“Today’s House vote on Trump’s tax bill represents a massive $4.5 trillion tax burden on large corporations and wealthy individuals, all at the expense of American working families,” Sewell remarked. “This legislation will push 13.7 million Americans off Medicaid and slash $300 billion from SNAP benefits for families in need.”

Similarly, Speaker Shomari’s figures (D-Mobile) also cast a vote against the bill, sharing concerns about its detrimental impacts.
“One in four people in my district relies on Medicaid,” he emphasized. “These individuals cannot afford to lose access to healthcare or SNAP benefits. The reality is that those who depend on these programs are already struggling, and this bill further jeopardizes their livelihoods.”
SNAP benefits have little value for those in dire need if Medicaid access is stripped away. Therefore, I voted against the Republican budget proposal. pic.twitter.com/oqndsmjhmo
