Alabama's congressional delegation weighed in on President Joe Biden's State of the Union address Thursday night. As expected, Republican lawmakers criticized Biden's fourth State of the Union address, while Democratic Representative Terry Sewell praised the speech.
“This is the fourth time I've heard President Biden address a joint session of the House and Senate,” said Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville). “And all four times, the overall message was the same: to deflect, to mislead, to play a highly partisan blame game. The reality is that under Joe Biden's leadership, , the state of our union is precarious at best.”
Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) said the union's status is “in jeopardy.”
“Mr. President, the American people know that the union status quo is not strong,” he said. “We are in crisis because of the policies of your administration and the Democrats in Congress.”
Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville) said Mr. Biden was negligent in not mentioning the crisis at the southern border.

“Joe Biden has referred to his 'predecessor' 14 times, but never once has he identified illegal crossings at the southern border as a crisis,” Strong said. “Tonight's speech proves that he remains unwilling to acknowledge the reality facing American families.”
Sewell (D-Birmingham) said he appreciated Biden's powerful message of hope over fear and acknowledgment of Bloody Sunday.
“I am especially grateful that President Biden recognized the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday and called on Congress to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act,” she said.
Congressman Robert Aderholt: “This is the fourth time I've heard President Biden address a joint session of the House and Senate. And all four times, the overall message was the same: to divert, mislead, and violently partisan.” The reality is that under Joe Biden's leadership, the state of our unions is shaky at best.
“Americans continue to suffer from high inflation, our porous southern border is an unprecedented disaster, and our allies are concerned about our so-called leadership overseas, while our adversaries are scoffing. President Biden could address these issues directly, but chose to use House Republicans as scapegoats.
“President Biden also continues to promote left-wing policies and aggressive woke politics that were previously unimaginable. For example, long gone are the days when even Democrats thought abortion should be 'rare.' It passed a long time ago. Now, President Biden and the Democratic Party are promoting taxpayer-funded abortions at every opportunity, even in defense funding. And while I deeply sympathize with Kate Cox and her family facing her difficult prenatal diagnosis, the reality is that even her doctor was unable to grant a medical exception that would allow her to have an abortion. i disagree.
“Tonight, the President has chosen to sow division and fear among families struggling with infertility. This is an affliction that plagues so many families, so we hope that infertility will continue to grow with a ruling that reaffirms the value of human life. It is essential to be clear that treatment is not threatening. At Alabama, we support life-affirming infertility treatments, including responsible in vitro fertilization. We also support parents who have trusted us. We also recognize the need for common sense regulation of the fertility industry on behalf of the industry.”
Congressman Gary Palmer:“In just three years, Biden opened our borders and allowed more than 8 million immigrants to enter our country illegally,” said Congressman Palmer.
“Some of them are 361 people on the terrorist watch list who were arrested at the border. There are thousands of illegal immigrants here with serious criminal records. Since Biden took office, 165 non-citizens were convicted of murder or manslaughter and more than 1,200 were convicted of sexual assault. The number of people who died at the hands of non-citizens in the first 44 days of this year averaged It's clear that Biden and the Democrats' open borders policy is a major national security issue and a major public safety issue.
“Biden and the Democrats have pushed laws and regulations that have increased the national debt by trillions of dollars and raised energy costs, housing costs, and essential household expenses. Biden and his Democratic co-conspirators in the House and Senate are to blame. The cost of groceries has increased by more than 21% in 2017. As a result, older people have to take jobs or work at charities to ensure they have enough to eat, pay their utility bills, and afford their medicine. We have to rely on food pantries.
“Mr. Palmer concluded, 'No, Mr. President, the American people know that the current state of unions is not strong. They are in crisis because of the policies of your administration and the Democrats in Congress.'
Rep. Dale Strong: “Tonight, we saw a highly political speech by a president who seems obsessed with President Trump. Joe Biden mentioned his “predecessor” 14 times, but the South Illegal border crossings have never been recognized as a crisis. Tonight's speech proves that he still refuses to acknowledge the reality facing American families.
“President Biden has called for trillions in new spending, funded by billions in new taxes, and borrowed the rest from China. With the United States Supreme Court sitting before him, he He claims to be a unifier, but the American people have seen all the evidence before their eyes.''
Congressman Terry Sewell: “Tonight, Americans listened as President Biden delivered a powerful message of hope over fear, democracy over tyranny, and progress over dysfunction. It highlighted the stark contrast between his vision and the efforts of some to set us back.
“We are especially grateful that President Biden recognized the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday and called on Congress to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. At a time when we are working to roll back hard-fought rights and freedoms, President Biden and the Democratic Party stand together to protect our democracy and our sacred right to vote!”
