House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels detailed his proposed resolution to the Alabama Supreme Court's IVF ruling as the state Legislature considers its path forward.
Daniels, D-Huntsville, said the ruling already makes it harder for parents with fertility issues to start a family.
“I'm hearing from many families across the state of Alabama who are very concerned,” he said. capitol journalTodd Stacy.
“We have recently married families in their 40s who finally had viable fetuses,” Daniels said. “But they had an appointment scheduled for March 11th, and then the fertility clinic called and said your appointment had been postponed.”
“My bill would essentially end the Supreme Court's decision,” Daniels said. “This suspends the Supreme Court's ruling that a fertilized egg is not a child.”
“That's essentially what it is. It doesn't say when life begins or ends.”
Daniels also explained why he believes President Trump last week called on state legislatures to quickly address the issue.
“The mere fact that former President Trump mentioned protecting IVF in his remarks could send a signal to Republicans in Alabama that they must address this issue as soon as possible.”
“I think the former president understands the political implications of November, because if this issue isn't resolved, it's going to be a disaster in November,” Daniels said.
