Lucky to have Bobby Robbins
Over the past 30 years, I have interacted with six presidents of the University of Arizona. Bobby Robbins is special. He’s an innovator, and by most objective measures, the college is doing better than when he was hired. Freshman test scores and GPAs have improved significantly. Research costs are up. UA is highly ranked by most publications. Our college is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as one of the best Hispanic service institutions in the country.
Universities (especially Robbins) have become a national model for dealing with the COVID pandemic. He is an excellent fundraiser connecting with students, donors, alumni and politicians. During his administration, the Foundation’s endowment increased to over his $1.2 billion. Our New Optical His college is a national model, and the university recently secured more than $160 million for a new Immunology Research Center.

All presidents have their critics, and Bobby Robbins is no exception. But from my point of view, I’m lucky to have him.
We can do better than Proposition 412
Hamed, Rappaport and Kozatik’s April 14, 16 and 19 star opinions were very compelling about the TEP franchise proposal (Proposition 412). In some respects, he could do better by spending time negotiating with TEP for more meaningful participation in climate action. I think TEP is part of a shareholder capitalist environment and the community wants them (and UA) to be more involved in the game. Just changing the status quo a little won’t work. As written, it’s no good tying us to this 25-year contract of his. My wife and I voted NO on Proposition 412 and I think you should do the same.
UA Players Escape Both Basketball Programs
It’s the story of Pandora’s box. College athletic directors and coaches (and college presidents) are focused on giving fans exactly what they want. Championship teams and elite players to fund huge capital projects related to facilities and salaries. This took shape perversely through “transfer portals” created to make it easier for players to leave the program, and instead of coaches recruiting and developing players, elite (but unfortunate) athletes were “recruited”. Makes it even easier to ‘cherry-pick’. The tail is wagging the dog…
great doctor
In 2022, the aortic valve slowly closed, making it difficult to breathe. At 86, I was ill-suited for open-heart surgery, but I was going to die if I didn’t do something. After several tests, I qualified for the TAVR procedure.TAVR (also called transcatheter aortic valve placement) is a less invasive procedure to replace a diseased aortic valve. During the procedure, a TAVR doctor uses a catheter to implant a new valve within the diseased valve. TAVR can be done through a small incision in the leg.
I had surgery on September 7, 2022 and it was successful. After she had 35 heart treatments, I was able to breathe normally.
I want to thank TMC and the wonderful doctors who saved my life. Dr. Peter Hanna, Dr. John Meaney, Dr. Algio, Dr. Wagoner, and the Pima Heart and Vascular nurses who have assisted in 35 heart surgeries. treatment.
AGAINST PROPOSITION 412
I vote against. Tens of thousands of mobile home owners can install solar panels if Arizona, Tucson, or TEP cares about helping their citizens and the environment. However, TEP et.al. Say no. no.
artificially high gasoline prices
It’s interesting to note that gas prices have skyrocketed in Pima County/Tucson so far this year. Earlier this year (early January) gas prices were just over $3 for him. This week it’s about $4.50 per gallon. These gas prices always seem to spike just before spring and summer road trips and vacations. These include refinery maintenance issues in South Texas, switching to cleaner-burning summer blends, and rising oil prices. This is very strange. Because right now oil prices are only $2 a barrel higher than he was in early January ($80 vs $82). Also, in Pima County (Maricopa County only), cleaner burning fuel is not a requirement. It seems to me that the big oil companies are trying to maximize their profits again.
Constitution
Re: April 17 letter “Constitution”.
Yes, it was written by a rich white man. But look at the wonderful country it has created. Our Founding Fathers were like our beloved dogs. They had a “bad dog” side. And now Republicans are pooping all over the Arizona carpet.
Judge Clarence Thomas
Years ago, Anita Hill told us who Clarence Thomas is. Today we have enough evidence that she was right. Unfortunately, he’s just the tip of this particular iceberg.
climate change
A. More development = rising temperatures due to the heat island effect and less or less water to sustain population growth.
B. No more development = no heat island effect and more water available to current population.
