Jarred “Jay” Wellborn, a lawyer and small business owner, announced on Wednesday that he is running for the position of District Court Judge in Shelby County.
This new judicial role was created by the Alabama Legislature during its 2024 session, responding to increasing caseloads and population growth in one of the state’s rapidly developing counties.
Wellborn emphasized the need for a judge with diverse experiences, stating, “We believe Shelby County deserves a district court judge who brings a wide lens— a balanced experience on the bench.”
He added, “This isn’t just a job for me; it’s a path shaped by years of professional and personal growth. My career has been about serving people from all walks of life, and now I’m prepared to continue that service in a significant new way.”
According to him, “I’m not limited to one specific area of law. I have managed operations in the private sector, represented clients across nearly every court level in Alabama, and held state legal positions. I understand hard work and aim to lead with fairness and empathy while remaining committed to the law.”
Wellborn has previously held the position of president of the Shelby County Bar Association and currently serves as the executive chairman of the Shelby County Court-appointed Special Advocates (CASA).
He is also a dedicated volunteer with the Shelby County Children’s Policy Council, a former registered mediator at the Alabama Center for Conflict Resolution, and serves on the board of Brookland Christian Academy’s Board of Education.
He reiterated that this role isn’t about personal gain for him. “This is where I want to serve. I’m not looking for a higher position or political advancement,” he noted. “My true commitment is here, at the district court level, where people come seeking assistance daily.”
Reflecting on his candidacy, he mentioned, “When I prayed for this opportunity and thought it through, I realized it’s more about integrity than ambition. I believe God has equipped me with lifelong experiences for this role.”
Wellborn is affiliated with both the Alabama and Shelby County Republican parties. He earned his BS from the University of Alabama and his Juris Doctor from the Birmingham School of Law.
The Alabama Republican primary is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
