Authorities Charge Man With Attempting To Assassination Donald Trump

Federal prosecutors formally charged 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh on Tuesday with attempting to assassinate a major political candidate, according to court documents.

Former President Donald Trump was golfing in West Palm Beach, Florida, on September 15 when authorities found the barrel of a Routh rifle sticking out of some bushes and he was rushed to safety. The Department of Justice (DOJ) said: Additional charges He is charged with attempted assassination of a presidential candidate, assault on a federal officer, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and two previous firearm-related charges. After Routh's arrest, authorities said the 58-year-old was hiding in bushes at the Trump International Golf Course when a Secret Service agent spotted Routh's gun while looking ahead of Trump on the course and engaged in a battle with him, causing him to flee.

Routh was later arrested in Martin County, Florida, where he fled the scene, where authorities found him in possession of an AK-47-style rifle, two backpacks containing ceramic plates and a GoPro camera. Prosecutors said Monday that cellphone data showed Routh was at the golf course and Mar-a-Lago from Aug. 18 until his arrest, and that he had been stalking the former president for more than a month. The indictment alleges that Routh not only “intentionally” attempted to kill Trump, but also “forcibly assaulted” him.[ed],be against[d]to disrupt[d]to intimidate[d]and interfere[d] and Special Agent No. 1 of the Secret Service, an officer and employee of the United States.” Additionally, the original gun charges against Routh state that he “knowingly possessed” “firearms and ammunition” despite having previously been “convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment,” as well as possessing firearms “with the importer and manufacturer's serial numbers removed, obliterated or altered.”

CNN reported that the case will be presided over by Judge Eileen Cannon, a Trump appointee who previously presided over the former president's classified documents case. Routh is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
