Incident Involving DHS and Border Patrol Agents in Chicago
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported an incident in Chicago on Saturday, involving Border Patrol agents who were surrounded by vehicles and faced an assault, which included setting an armed woman on fire.
Authorities indicated that no serious injuries were incurred by law enforcement during the event. The FBI noted that this incident followed a week where suspects had reportedly pursued federal officials. DHS condemned the use of vehicles against law enforcement, after stating that “illegal foreigners” targeted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in two separate events in Chicago.
“Our brave law enforcement officers were boxed in by ten cars while on a routine patrol nearby in Broadview,” stated an official on Saturday. “The agent could not move or exit the vehicle. One of the assailants that collided with law enforcement was armed with a semi-automatic weapon. Officers were compelled to defend themselves and fired shots at armed individuals who subsequently sought medical attention.”
DHS explained that ICE initiated Operation Midway Blitz in Illinois on September 8, focusing on illegal immigrants attracted to the area due to sanctuary laws. Local politicians, including Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, have opposed these efforts, contributing to unrest within the region.
During this operation, DHS apprehended over 800 illegal immigrants. This included serious offenders, according to an announcement made by agents. The ongoing targeting of ICE agents has drawn considerable media attention as they continue efforts to deport illegal immigrants, despite a rise in illegal crossings throughout the Biden administration.
“Comparing ICE agents to Nazi Gestapos or secret police is wholly inappropriate. The men and women of ICE and CBP are family members, just like anyone else. Each day, they strive to enhance community safety, seeking to return home to their own families at day’s end,” the official lamented.
