Avian flu detected in Maricopa County milk, facility quarantined | News

Phoenix, Arizona – The Arizona Department of Agriculture (AZDA) confirmed the state’s first detection of H5N1 avian influenza in milk from a herd of dairy cows in Maricopa County on February 11, 2025.

The facility is currently being quarantined as a precaution. Azda worked with the USDA (USDA) to identify the case through its National Milk Testing Strategy.

This particular strain, known as D1.1, does not cause disease in the cows, but the herd is closely monitored for signs of disease.

Azda emphasized that pasteurized dairy products and dairy products are safe for consumption.

They reassured the public that the risk of human infection is low and has nothing to do with Nevada’s recent detection.

The agency works with health services to ensure the safety of dairy workers and to curb potential spread among livestock.

While the risk to the general public is minimal, people in close contact with cattle can face an increased risk.
