Arizona Western College celebrated its new facility in La Paz County Monday afternoon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local leaders and AWC officials.
KAWC's Stephanie Sanchez reports.
The Arizona Western College Parker Community Center is located next to the AWC Parker Learning Center. It will be used for classroom space, a fitness center, prep kitchen and office space.
The 11,200-square-foot building has four central classrooms that can be converted into a large conference space and can accommodate more than 200 guests.
Catherine Ocampo, AWC's assistant dean for La Paz County Services, said the new facility will serve as a venue for community events.
“I think the growth and expansion of the university is a great addition to the county. We're always looking for economic growth and development,” Ocampo said. “The university can definitely help with that and provide training as the county and community continues to grow.” ”
Colorado River Indian Tribe council member Amelia Flores said the proximity of the facility is an advantage for tribal members.
“You don't have to go to Lake Havasu, you don't have to go to Phoenix or Bryce. Everything can stay here,” Flores said. “We can generate taxes, we can create jobs, we can educate our people and potentially bring those classes here.”
The total cost of the new AWC Parker Community Center is estimated at approximately $1.8 million.
