The U.S. Department of Transportation announced new grant awards for three Alabama airports. The grant is part of a larger federal funding package supporting 114 airports across 44 states and three territories.
The Alabama airports receiving funding are Huntsville International Airport, HL “Sonny” Callahan Airport in Fairhope, and Gulf Shores International Airport. In total, the three airports received about $12 million in terminal and concourse updates, with Huntsville getting $7 million, Callahan $2 million and Gulf Shores $5 million.
Shanetta R. Griffin, PE, FAA's assistant administrator for airports, said the funding will go beyond just updating airports.
“This funding will not only help modernize the airport to meet the needs of travelers now and for years to come, but it will also help create good-paying job opportunities in communities large and small.” said Griffin.
Congressman Dale Strong, who represents the district where Huntsville International Airport is located, announced the new funding.
“The Federal Aviation Administration's continued investment in Huntsville International will significantly improve the experience for travelers traveling to and from North Alabama's airports,” Strong said. “It is critical that the airport continues to support economic development efforts and serve as a reliable transportation hub for the people of northern Alabama and southern Tennessee.”
“As your representative, I am always proud to see our hard-earned tax dollars return to our homeland.”
