President Joe Biden is set to announce the first offshore wind lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday afternoon at an event that will push the administration’s economic agenda, according to the White House.
The lease will span three areas, one approximately 100,000 acres offshore Lake Charles, Louisiana and the other two areas totaling approximately 200,000 acres offshore Galveston, Texas. according to to the White House. The government has previously sold offshore wind power leases off the Pacific coast. new york, carolina and Californiawhich is considering several additional projects off the East Coast, will make its Gulf of Mexico sale, scheduled for Aug. 29, its first federal lease in the region. “Today’s announcement marks another historic step in the efforts of the Biden-Harris administration to create a clean energy future,” Interior Department Secretary Deb Haaland said in an accompanying memo. press release“By advancing the Gulf of Mexico’s offshore wind energy potential, we can help tackle the climate crisis, reduce energy costs for families, and create high-paying jobs.”

The expected price for the leasehold was not immediately clear, but a record $1.5 billion bid was made in a federal leasehold auction for areas offshore New York and New Jersey. according to to Reuters. The New Jersey area’s offshore wind industry has faced criticism from some environmental activists after an unusual spike in whale deaths in the region.
The White House said Biden will announce the sale of the shipyard’s lease during a speech celebrating the construction of a U.S.-made offshore wind farm at the Philadelphia shipyard. The White House considers the development of offshore wind projects to be “a key pillar of Bidennomics,” a term the president has used to advertise his economic policies.
