President Joe Biden revealed on Wednesday that his first great-grandchild was born while being briefed on the wildfires raging just a few miles from him in Los Angeles, California.
Biden arrived in Los Angeles on Monday as he was scheduled to visit the Coachella Valley and designate two new national monuments. The president’s plans were canceled due to strong winds and wildfires in the area. The 82-year-old remained in town and was briefed by officials at the Santa Monica Fire Department, where he revealed at the end of a somber news conference that his granddaughter, Naomi Biden, had given birth. “And the president just happened to be in the area, in the city. It’s impossible to express in words the level of gratitude and cooperation that we received from the White House and this administration,” Biden’s first remarks on the wildfires. Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom said in response.
“So, on behalf of all of us, Mr. President, thank you for being here, not just today, but thank you for being here from the moment of this incident,” Newsom added.
“It’s amazing what’s going on,” Biden said, adding that he had previously believed his son’s home had been destroyed as a result of the fire.
“But the good news is, starting today, I’m a great-grandfather,” the president continued. “I have a new granddaughter. A 10-pound baby girl…baby boy. So I’ll never forget this day.”
After briefing attendees congratulated the president, White House staff could be heard ushering reporters in before the 82-year-old president answered questions.
The president revealed in an interview with USA Today published Wednesday that Naomi Biden was scheduled to have a C-section. Biden was scheduled to return to the White House on Wednesday afternoon until his Tuesday appointment was canceled.
Biden and the first lady stopped by Cedars-Sinai Hospital on Wednesday morning, and Hunter Biden, Naomi Biden’s father and wife Melissa were also seen entering the hospital.
The president corrected himself after making a comment about the gender of Naomi’s baby, and the first lady posted that the baby was a boy. Instagram post.

“We’re doing everything necessary to contain these fires…to make sure you get back to normal. It’s going to be a hell of a journey. It’s going to take time.” The president began speaking after officials finished explaining the wildfires.
