Biden visits California to talk climate, raise cash

President Biden is set to announce more than $600 million in federal spending to combat the effects of climate change in Palo Alto on Monday. But much of his multi-day trip to California is focused on raising money for his 2024 re-election campaign, especially from Silicon Valley tech leaders.

Biden will be accompanied by Gov. Gavin Newsom as he tours the Lucy Evans Baylands Nature Interpretive Center and Preserve. A White House official said after touring the wetlands, he requested funding to protect the country’s power grid and communities along the coast and around the Great Lakes, areas vulnerable to storm surges, rising sea levels and flooding. It is scheduled to be announced.

“The president will discuss his administration’s historic actions to combat the climate crisis, create high-paying clean energy jobs and protect the environment for future generations,” the official said. “He also highlights how unprecedented federal investment and local leadership are helping build communities that are not only climate resilient, but safer, equitable and economically strong. “

But much of his time will be spent raising money in states that are key to his re-election.

In 2020, Californians spent $305.6 million in support of his campaign, according to an analysis of donations from individuals of $200 or more by the bipartisan Center for Response and Politics, which is his total. It accounted for more than one-fifth of income, more than any other state in the nation. . And that amount does not include contributions to political action committees that operate independently of the campaign.

Mr. Biden’s wife, First Lady Jill Biden, held fundraiser in the Bay Area and Los Angeles last week.

The president has multiple fundraising activities on Monday and Tuesday. Democrats familiar with their plans say the organizers include former EBay executive and 2006 gubernatorial candidate Steve Westley and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, but the public could not discuss it.
