In response to Secretary of State Wes Allen's warning on Tuesday, President Biden's campaign released a statement saying “Joe Biden will be on the ballot in all 50 states.”
“State officials have the authority to grant provisional ballot access certifications prior to the conclusion of their presidential nominating conventions. In 2020 alone, states such as Alabama, Illinois, Montana and Washington all granted provisional certifications to Democratic and Republican candidates,” the campaign said.
In 2020, both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions filed provisional certifications in Alabama, with both candidates appearing on the ballot. The certification deadline was extended to August 20, 2020 for that election only. The Republican National Convention ended on August 27, 2020. The Democratic National Convention ended right on the August 20, 2020 deadline.

Twenty years ago, the Democratic National Convention missed Alabama's certification deadline in 2000, leaving candidates on the ballot. The state's certification deadline was August 5, 2000. The Democratic National Convention ended on August 17, 2000. Al Gore and Joe Lieberman appeared on the November ballot.
Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, who served in the House of Representatives in 2020, voted in favor of a temporary solution to align the state's deadline with the Republican National Convention. Now, as Alabama's top elections official, Allen has been tough in directing Democratic leaders, especially in the absence of similar legislation to fix legal deadline discrepancies for the 2024 election.
The RNC convention is scheduled to conclude on July 18, 2024, well before Alabama's Aug. 15, 2024 certification deadline.
The Alabama Legislature adjourned on Tuesday, completing the 20th day of the 2024 legislative session. With less than 10 days remaining in the 30-day regular session, no state lawmakers have introduced bills to address the looming deadline.
