A bit of a reminder for you all: let’s not jump back inappropriately to print.
You may have come across a video showing an illegal immigrant truck driver who tragically caused the death of three individuals due to reckless driving. Today, we’re going to delve deeper into that case.

Hit the brakes
An illegal immigrant from India was arrested on Saturday and charged with vehicular homicide after a crash that resulted in the deaths of three Americans last Thursday.
Harjinder Singh, along with his passengers, was operating a semi-truck with a large trailer on a Florida highway when they realized they were going in the wrong direction. Instead of turning around correctly, Singh decided to make an illegal U-turn.
He pulled the truck into a lane designated for “official use only,” stretching the trailer into oncoming traffic. Moments later, a Chrysler minivan traveling in the left lane collided with the trailer.
Sadly, all three occupants of the minivan—a 30-year-old man, a 37-year-old woman, and a 54-year-old man—lost their lives. It’s a stark reminder that driving habits can often reflect deep-seated attitudes, and in Singh’s case, this tragedy was entirely preventable.
Singh had crossed the border illegally in September 2018 and was identified for expedited deportation under the Trump administration. However, he filed an asylum claim. According to reports, he was released on a $5,000 bond in January 2019 and entered immigration proceedings.
Asylum claim? From India? That seems questionable. As highlighted by the BBC, the rise in asylum claims from India doesn’t stem from an increase in oppression but rather reflects a strategic move to exploit the system. Devesh Kapur from Johns Hopkins University stated that it suggests a more economic motivation rather than genuine fear of persecution.
The majority of asylum seekers hailing from India come from well-off regions, where the costs associated with immigration are manageable. The conclusion? Many of these applicants are really economic immigrants rather than those fleeing dire conditions.
While Singh was pushing for asylum, the Trump administration denied him a work permit. Then in 2021, the Biden administration granted him one. He subsequently acquired commercial driver’s licenses in both California and Washington.
Interestingly, a preliminary investigation from the Department of Transportation revealed that Washington issued him a full-term commercial driver’s license in 2023 despite his unworthiness for such a license. The following year, Singh received a limited license in California, which is generally given to non-residents, often foreigners.
In June, it was reported that Transport Secretary Sean Duffy had initiated an audit of these non-dominant licenses to ensure they aren’t misused, especially for unqualified individuals like illegal immigrants.
Duffy remarked that the previous administration’s lenient border policies contributed to significant issues within the trucking licensing system, prompting this national audit to uncover the truth behind these licenses.
In May, Duffy also signed an order mandating that commercial vehicle drivers be placed out-of-service if they fail to meet the English Proficiency standards set forth by the Federal Motor Vehicle Carrier Safety Administration.
Singh’s inability to meet the English requirements became evident, as he only correctly answered two out of twelve oral questions and identified just one out of four traffic signs.
Ultimately, there were numerous opportunities that could have prevented Singh from causing the deaths of three Americans. Instead, unfortunately, he was handed the keys to a vehicle capable of inflicting such harm.
