Biden’s ‘Friend’ At NYT Tells Him To Drop Out After Disastrous Debate: ‘Heartbreaking Moment’

In a piece published Friday morning, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman called on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 election.

During the 90-minute debate Thursday night, moderated by CNN hosts Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, Biden appeared to freeze up at various times and made verbal gaffes. “The Biden family and political team must hastily assemble and have the hardest conversation with the president — a conversation of love, clarity, and determination,” Friedman wrote. “To give America the best chance of deterring the Trump threat in November, the president must voluntarily declare that he will not run for reelection and will send all of his delegates to the Democratic National Convention.”

During the debate, odds rose on betting that California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom would become the party's nominee, with Vice President Kamala Harris also being touted as a possible successor.

“If Vice President Kamala Harris wants to run, she should,” Friedman wrote, “but voters should be subjected to an open process to find a Democratic presidential candidate who can unite not just the party but the country; someone who can offer what neither man demonstrated on stage in Atlanta Thursday night: a compelling portrayal of the current state of the world and a compelling vision of what America can and must do to continue to lead the world morally, economically, and diplomatically.”

Biden invited a New York Times columnist to the White House lunch The two had a private conversation in May 2022. In his op-ed, Friedman called the president a “friend since our trips together to Afghanistan and Pakistan after 9/11.”

Biden did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
