The Democratic-majority New York state legislature passed a bill late Friday night that would automatically close most criminal records.

“Clean Slate offers individuals who have paid off their debt to society a true second chance, enabling them to restart their lives and become active contributors to their communities.” Said Democratic Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. “By passing a clean slate, we are affirming our belief in redemption and improving society by giving former incarcerated people better opportunities to enter the workforce and establish a stable life.”

The bill allows for some exceptions, exempting Class A felonies, such as terrorism, murder, kidnapping, and some sex offenses, which carry life sentences, from being sealed.

“I am very proud to serve in a legislative body that recognizes the economic, moral and public safety imperatives of passing a clean slate.” Said The bill was sponsored by Democratic Senator Zelner Miley. “This law makes clear that New Yorkers returning to the community after serving their sentences will not incur other debts until they have rebuilt their lives, received housing and education, and secured favorable employment.

“This law is totally irresponsible.” Said State Republican Rep. Mike Tanosis. “When will we finally hold criminals accountable for their actions? I’ve been here three years and the day hasn’t come yet. I still live in this state.” Let’s hope things happen soon before the rest of New Yorkers flee.”
