Pima County officials have released a briefing document containing snippets of body camera footage depicting the fatal shooting by Tucson police on March 14.
The footage was released by the Pima Regional Critical Incidents Team, which consists of law enforcement agencies throughout southern Arizona and investigates cases in each department within the county.
The report said the shooting occurred near the intersection of Grant Road and Treat Avenue after receiving a call of an armed robbery at a clinic shortly before 3:30 p.m.
Surveillance footage showed a man, later identified as Nicolas Mauro Sosa, 37, wearing a black tank top and shorts, jumping over the counter and pointing a pistol at an employee. The video shares a 911 recording from a man who said he last saw Sosa running west on Grant Road.
Responding officers searched for Sosa on foot, after which a sergeant found her occupied in a restaurant near a pharmacy. Body camera footage showed the sergeant ordering Sosa to the ground, then firing his rifle three times and taking cover.
A Tucson Police Department SWAT team was eventually dispatched to the scene, and officers learned that the restaurant employee had escaped without injury. The SWAT team made repeated attempts to contact Sosa before entering the restaurant, but she was found with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was confirmed dead at the scene.
Police identified the sergeant who shot Sosa as sergeant John Johnson. Jesse Klopowitz is a 14-year veteran of the division.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office and the University of Arizona Police Department are leading criminal investigations into the shooting, and the Tucson Police Department is conducting an administrative investigation to determine whether the shooting falls within department policy.
