Cindy Myrex is probably headed for a runoff against Clint Hollingsworth in the special GOP primary election for Alabama House District 12.

On Tuesday, Republican candidate Cindy Myrex was close to avoiding a runoff in the Alabama House District election, trailing by about 20 votes.

A special election is being held to fill the vacancy left by former state representative Corey Harbison, who resigned from his position in the Kalman area earlier this year.

With a total of 4,235 votes cast, Cindy Myrex, who works in real estate, received 49.81% of the votes. She was up against local businessman Clint Hollingsworth, who garnered 43.24%. Other candidates, Heather Doyle and Dan McWhorter, were also on the ballot but received fewer than 150 votes each.

Although officials, including representatives from the Alabama Republican Party, anticipate some discrepancies in the election results, the Kalman County Registrar Board will review the preliminary votes next Tuesday. Myrex still has an opportunity to win outright.

With approximately 20 provisional votes pending, Myrex still has a solid chance of avoiding a runoff. To clinch the win, nearly all of the remaining votes would need to favor her.

On Election Day, Hollingsworth noted that some voters seemed confused about their registration districts and urged them to ensure they cast their provisional votes.

The unofficial final results, as reported by the Alabama Secretary of State’s office, are:

  • Heather Doyle: 150 votes – 3.51%
  • Clint Hollingsworth: 1,848 votes – 43.24%
  • Dan McWhorter: 147 votes – 3.44%
  • Cindy Myrex: 2,090 votes – 49.81%

“We appreciate all candidates for their dedication and the effort they put into their campaigns,” said Jeannie Burniston, the ALGOP Director of Affairs & Communications, on Tuesday evening.

“Public service is a vital commitment, and we respect anyone contributing to improve our community. District 12 is traditionally a Republican area. President Trump received nearly 90% of the votes in Kalman County.”

If a runoff between Myrex and Hollingsworth is needed after counting provisional votes, it is set to occur on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
