“I understand that making that assessment of your boss may be uncomfortable at any time, especially in public, on television, but Biden himself has said for months that age is a legitimate issue,” Bolduin said. “And last week, CNN reported that Biden told Democratic governors that his post-debate plans include not scheduling any events after 8 p.m. to allow for more sleep. From a national security perspective, how can any president be effective if they impose an 8 p.m. deadline?”

“Well, I think the White House has denied those allegations and those reports, but let's put that aside for a second, Kate,” Kirby responded. “He's the president of the United States, he's the commander in chief, and that's a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week job. And from my experience here, and from what I've seen firsthand on the street and here in Washington, D.C., if the national security team needs to see the president, they go to see the president, and it doesn't matter what time the clock says. He's always there, he's always available. And they can contact him at any time. And he also knows that the world doesn't catch its breath after a certain time of day.”

Biden said that trips to France, California and Italy two weeks before the debate affected his performance in meetings with state governors, The New York Times reported, and said that Biden had told staff he needed more rest but relentlessly pushed himself and ignored their concerns about his schedule.

“He's again, working around the clock, bombarding his team with constant questions. That's the commander in chief that I've seen,” Kirby added. “And more importantly, Kate, as the commander in chief, he knows that's what he has to do, and he's been here for the last three and a half years.”
