CNN host Dana Bash on Monday pressed former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi about President Joe Biden's decision not to seek reelection.
Pelosi Said On Sunday, she told CBS News' “60 Minutes” that she “hasn't called anyone” in connection to Biden's decision to withdraw from the presidential race in 2024. The former House speaker was on the defensive when pressed by Bash on Monday night, telling the CNN host that she was “not spearheading a pressure campaign” and hasn't spoken to Biden since he dropped out.
“I want to ask you about President Biden. You said he hasn't appointed anyone to pressure him to resign,” Bash said.
“I didn't. I didn't,” Pelosi said.
Bash noted that some of the lawmakers who have publicly called for Biden to resign are “closest” to Pelosi, and asked point-blank whether the former House speaker had anything to do with her ally's comments.
“I thought, 'Oh, those are all Pelosi's people.' You have nothing to do with that?” Bash demanded.
“I have hundreds of allies in the United States Congress,” Pelosi countered.
“Yeah, I know,” Bash said.
“But they are, but they are the closest,” Bash replied after Pelosi repeatedly interjected.
“No, I have nothing to do with that,” Pelosi insisted. “It's almost an insult to them because they are powerful people in the United States Congress. They make their own decisions and their own statements.” (Related: Biden's resignation announcement sparks massive political shockwave, sparks a flurry of reactions)
Pelosi also acknowledged that she has not spoken to Biden since he dropped out of the 2024 race.
When asked about her relationship with the president, Speaker Pelosi told Bash, “I'll have to ask him, but I hope so.”
California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff and Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin The known allies of Pelosi are among a number of senior Democrats who have publicly called for Biden to step down. Other prominent Democrats who have publicly called for Biden to step down include Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Contrary to Pelosi's own words, various reports suggest she has been working behind closed doors to oust Biden, with reports saying she has held private meetings with Democrats to discuss what it takes to win the election, even if it means replacing Biden with another candidate.
