CNN panelist Michael Warren said Friday that Vice President Kamala Harris' pivot from past far-left policies has created a messaging problem for Republican nominee Donald Trump's campaign.
Warren, a senior editor at The Dispatch, argued on Inside Politics with Dana Bash that the Trump campaign was struggling to decide whether to most effectively attack Harris, who has shifted to more centrist positions on many issues, as a “position changer” or a radical leftist. Harris has a track record of far-left policies throughout her political career, and was the second-most liberal senator appointed to the 116th Congress, which served from January 3, 2019 to January 3, 2021, after Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders.
“But politically, I think it’s problematic for the Trump campaign to attack her for these things, because they’re trying to make the case that she’s a communist. [or] “Is she an extremist or a swinger? Because her swings are more centrist, election-oriented, almost Trumpian positions on these issues, which makes it very hard to mount an actual attack,” Warren said.

CNN chief national correspondent Jeff Zeleny said that both Trump and Harris suddenly changed their policy positions ahead of the general election, and that Harris needed to explain her policy changes to reporters because 27 days into her campaign she has not participated in any sit-down interviews or press conferences.
“Donald Trump also said this week that he's not going to replace Obamacare, so they both have issues that they're dealing with at this point. I mean, if I recall, that was a theme of his 2016 campaign, which was to repeal and replace Obamacare, and that didn't happen because over a decade later, that's more popular,” Zeleny said. “So she's changed her way of thinking about things. Who knows in 2019 if that was her real way of thinking or if she was adapting to that campaign or this campaign? She's got to embrace all of that.”
“That's one of the reasons why the debate and the interview are important — she needs to explain why she changed her view,” Zeleny continued. (Related: Kamala Harris fails to distance herself from left-wing 2020 campaign despite aides' best efforts)
As a U.S. senator, Harris co-sponsored the Green New Deal bill in 2019 and supported abolishing the filibuster to prevent Republicans from delaying the bill. Harris, now vice president, supported a ban on fracking during the 2020 presidential campaign, but her current campaign has told the campaign that Harris does not support such a ban.
Additionally, she co-signed Sanders' “Medicare for All” bill and then introduced her own health care bill that would allow Americans to keep their private insurance. Campaign During the 2019 presidential campaign, he worked hard to establish a “Medicare for All” system.
Harris further added: Supported In 2018, he denounced giving health insurance to illegal immigrants, likened Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to the Ku Klux Klan, and called for abolishing the agency and rebuilding it “from the ground up.” The vice president is now trying to remake himself as a tough-on-the-border candidate, advertisement In July, Harris claimed she would introduce new technology to stop drugs from entering the US, increase the number of Border Patrol agents and provide more funding to stop human trafficking.
NumbersUSA, a group that advocates for more “smart immigration,” has called Harris F-rating This is because he supported a number of bills that were said to weaken border security.
