CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten warned Thursday that President Donald Trump must fix inflation to preserve his current popularity with American voters.

Inflation has politically harmed President Biden’s president throughout his term and played a key role in helping Trump defeat former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Prices rose more than 20% during Biden’s term, with inflation rising from President Biden’s first 1.4% to a 9% peak in 2022. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell below 3% for the first time in July.
Many economists condemned the Biden administration’s expenditure spike, particularly in relation to the US rescue plan, and were responsible for the Inflation Reduction Act at the beginning of the former president’s term.
Numerous polls leading up to the election found that Trump was leading both Biden and Harris to the economy and inflation. Both of these issues were the best issues for voters during the election, allowing Trump to break in with blue-collar workers and Latino men.
A recent CBS News/Yougov poll found 66% of voters believe Trump should focus more on inflation, Enten noted. An exit poll conducted by the Marquette Act found that 27% of Americans now think the economy is “good or good.”
