Eight Cochise County teams competed in state and district championships in Mesa and Glendale May 4-6, with six state district winners.
Competing teams are: The Buena Colts at the Division 2 State Games. Division 3 Douglas Bulldogs. Division 5 Benson Bobcats, Bisbee Pumas, St. David Tigers, Tombstone Yellow Jackets, Valley Union Blue Devils, Wilcox Cowboys/Cowgirls.
Five area athletes took home the state title.
In the women’s event, Wilcox senior Mayley Thompson won two state titles by taking first place in the javelin and 200 meters.
Leanne Clough, Benson’s senior, took first place in the pole vault. In the men’s event, Tombstone junior Malachi Keller took first place in the high jump. Coy Richardson, a senior at St. David’s, took first place in the javelin throw. And Randen Vance, Benson’s senior, took first place in the discus throw.
The Division 2 Buena men’s team finished 29th overall out of 33 teams. Sophomore Emanuel Bochalski finished his ninth in shot put, and junior Gabriel Cummins finished seventh in 1600. Senior Jackson Grumman finished 4th in the 400m and 14th in the 200m. Junior Nick Heiser finished 18th with 3200. And the 4×400 team finished 10th.
The Colt Women’s Team finished 9th in javelin, 6th in shot put, and 27th overall out of 30 teams, with junior Ashlynn Lewis in shot put.
Buena coach Roger Bristow said the Divisionals were a good experience for everyone, both the coaches and the players. “I am very proud of the players and the coaching staff. We had a good season. 400m Jackson Grumman, 1600m Gabe Cummins and shot put Kamail Kerr will be competing at the weekend’s state competition.
Competing for the Douglas Bulldog Women in Division 3 were freshman Alexis Haimes, who finished 16th in the 100m hurdles, and freshman Corral Sainz, who finished 17th in the triple jump.

Round Valley and Chandler Preparatory Academy tied for first place in the Division 5 men’s team results with 76 points. “It’s been a great divisional event for us,” Tombstone coach Jake Winslow said.

Competing on the Wilcox men’s team were junior Jaden Wilson, who finished sixth in the shot put, and junior Yarya Hunter, who finished seventh in the triple jump and 17th in the 100m jump. Senior Ulises Izazzaga finished 13th in the 400m and 24th in the 800m. and 4×100 (1st grade Sawyer Thompson, 2nd grade Kayden Hooper, Hunter, 4th grade Josiah Sheets) was fifth.
Among Cowgirls competitors, senior Mary Thompson was first in the javelin and 200 meters, second in the long jump and 100 meters, and second in the 100 meters. Freshman Yehira Galaz placed 5th in discus and 11th in shot put. Junior Catherine Bell finished 13th in shot put and 18th in discus. Sophomore Jesmin Ceballos finished 18th in the triple jump. “We’ve never had so many players in a statement in the last few years,” Wilcox coach Mike Land said.

The Arizona Inter-High Association Open State Athletics Championships, featuring top-ranked athletes across all five disciplines combined, will take place Friday and Saturday, May 12 and 13 at Mesa Community College.
