Cochise County deputy resigns after a hit-and-run arrest

Douglas, Arizona (AP/3TV/CBS 5) — A Cochise County sheriff’s deputy who was arrested in connection with a recent hit-and-run accident in Douglas resigned Thursday, officials said. I collided with a parked vehicle that was not parked and left the scene.

At approximately 10:30 pm on December 9, Douglas Police said Peraza struck a parked car. However, investigators said the crash caused a second accident because another driver had left rims and tires when Peraza hit a parked vehicle. Police tracked down Peraza’s car about two miles (2 miles) from the original crash site.

Douglas police detained Peraza after officers conducted a DUI investigation. He was not jailed and was released pending indictment. The sheriff’s office gave Peraza paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the police investigation before he submitted his resignation.

County Sheriff Mark Danells said in a statement that Peraza “was a quality team member…but this one event cannot be undone.”
