Cochise County recommending residents sign up for new alert system

Sierra Vista, Arizona (KGUN) — Cochise County doesn’t forecast flooding until monsoon season, but warns residents to be prepared in case they need to evacuate.

Between 80 and 90 homes in St. David and Elfrida were affected by last summer’s floods, according to county emergency manager Dan Duchan.

He urges residents to be prepared and registered with the county’s warning system before the rainy season begins. Notify people who have signed up.

According to Duchan, the most common mistake people make in floods is to drive past instead of turning.

“Never go through a flooded washroom or arroyo to get to the other side of the road,” he said. “It’s always dangerous. Very little water can get a car going.”

Duchan also wants to remind people of the impact of flooding on dirt roads. It’s easy to forget that when it rains it creates mud and mud can cause your car to get stuck.

An alarm system will notify residents when they should prepare to evacuate and when they should actually leave their homes.
