Drone Program Launching in Cochise County, Arizona
In Bisbee, Arizona, a new drone pilot program is set to kick off in September 2025, focusing on enhancing border security at the US-Mexico border. The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office has made this announcement on its official Facebook page, revealing plans to collaborate with North American drone manufacturers, particularly Wasseramsel. This initiative aims to bolster situational awareness, improve emergency responses, and support law enforcement with advanced drone technology. Draganfly, the company behind the collaboration, first announced this partnership on June 10th through a press release.
Draganfly provides a range of aircraft tailored for specific missions. This includes long-range fixed-wing drones for extended boundary monitoring, AI-powered quadcopters for quick deployment, and thermal imaging systems suited for low-light and search-and-rescue operations. All these drones are manufactured in North America with a secure data framework—crucial for the delicate nature of border operations.
“With Draganfly, we’re investing in reliable US technology that helps us act faster and keep people safe,” said Tim Williams from the Sheriff’s Office. “These systems expand response options without imposing any costs on residents.”
Next Steps for Drone Deployment
The upcoming program is part of a broader endeavor to integrate cutting-edge tools into everyday operations. It’s hoped that these drone deployments will assist in monitoring smuggling activities, locating individuals in distress, and minimizing risks to personnel in remote and vulnerable areas.
Cochise County, located in southeastern Arizona, shares over 80 miles of border with Mexico and encompasses more than 6,000 square miles of challenging terrain. The Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Mark Dannels, is known for its innovative operations that have included high-resolution camera towers and surveillance systems. Moving towards drone technology seems a natural evolution, enhancing air coverage while expanding current capabilities.
Building a Partnership for Safety
Draganfly has been a leader in unmanned aircraft technology for over 20 years, serving applications in public safety, defense, and emergency services. Its drones are robust and secure—qualities that are essential in high-stakes environments. Their use has been instrumental in wildfire responses, search and rescue missions, and even providing medical supplies during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The partnership with Cochise County Sheriff’s Office marks a significant step forward in utilizing public safety drones,” mentioned Cameron Chell, CEO of Draganfly. “This program demonstrates how UAS platforms can enhance safety without heightening risk or costs.”
Federal Support for Drone Technology
The launch of the program aligns with new federal initiatives boosting domestic drone development. A recent executive order directs the Federal Aviation Administration to expand beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations, encourage pilot programs for vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, and streamline the review of exemptions using AI. This directive also emphasizes the importance of secure American-made UAS technologies.
For Cochise County, the timing could not be better. With support from reliable US manufacturers and a commitment to high-tech leadership, the Sheriff’s Office is well-positioned to spearhead this new era of drone-supported public safety.
